We are thrilled to announce that Florida Atlantic University has again chosen Paul
Kramer’s Learn to Fly Center as it’s sole provider of aircraft and support to the
University’s Biological Sciences Department for it’s Annual Shark Survey off the
Florida Coast.
Led by noted marine biologist, Dr. Stephen M. Kajiura, the shark count is the
foundation for our understanding of the health of our shark population. According
to Christina Henley, an owner of the Learn to Fly Center, on several of the flights last
year over 10,000 Blacktip sharks were seen each morning. “They are beautiful
creatures, and you can sometimes see them jumping into the air and spinning
around; a behavior seen only in Blacktip and Spinner sharks” remarked Henley.
Co-owner, Fred Perry, a Coast Guard Veteran, noted that, when our shark population
is healthy, our marine ecosystem is healthy; and the health of our marine life is
critical to SE Florida’s recreational fishing and diving industries.
Dr. Stephen Kajiura, an experienced pilot himself, will conduct the count between
Miami and Jupiter over the next few months. Dr. Kajiura flies just offshore at 500
feet above the water in one of the school’s Cessna 172 (High Wing) aircraft. This
provides a clear view of the sharks close to shore. “The data we have been collecting
over the past 7 years are critical to develop a baseline population estimate to
determine if the population is increasing or decreasing.”, says Kajiura.
Paul Kramer’s Learn to Fly Center offers Discovery Flights over the coastline or fly
west to see our wet and grassy ecosystem to the north of the Everglades, just west of
Fort Lauderdale.
